Explore the enduring beauty and cultural significance of Romanian folk art in Crossing Threads: Romanian Motifs in Minnesota, a special exhibition showcasing traditional Romanian embroidery, textiles, and decorative motifs alongside their influence and presence within Minnesota communities.
Featuring intricate patterns, symbolic designs, and handcrafted works, the exhibit highlights how Romanian traditions have traveled across generations and continents, preserving stories of identity, family, and cultural heritage. Visitors will discover the meanings behind distinctive motifs found on clothing, household textiles, and folk art, while learning about the connections between Romanian culture and Minnesota’s diverse cultural landscape.
Visitors will also learn about the Romanian traditional blouse, or ie, a remarkable garment recognized by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Richly adorned with regional motifs and generations of artistry, the ie stands as one of Romania’s most treasured cultural symbols and a powerful expression of identity, craftsmanship, and community.
Join us for the Opening Reception on October 4 from 1:00–3:00 PM to celebrate the launch of the exhibition and explore the rich artistic traditions woven into every thread. The afternoon will feature a special introduction by exhibition curators Monica von Geldern and Raluca Octav, who will share insights into the exhibition’s development, the significance of Romanian motifs, the heritage of the Romanian blouse, and the connections between traditional folk art and contemporary cultural life in Minnesota. Celebrate the opening of this unique exhibition, meet fellow community members, and explore the threads that connect Romanian heritage across time and place.
