It’s December 20th, 1989, Romania is boiling but no one talks about it. Life seems to go on as usual: censored theatre plays, demolished houses, proletarians gathered for a huge demonstration, students’ artistic moments mocking communism at the same time with New Year’s glorifying shows for Ceausescu. But in the dis-comfort of their unheated homes, people still struggle with the world’s ancient problems like the father-son difference of opinions, sweet nostalgia after an ex-lover or the hate towards the mother-in-law. And above all – The Secret Police is watching with vigilance.
Six apparently parallel life stories meet along in some invisible points of this tragicomedy, and at a boom of a firecracker they all drive to a common resolution: the end of a world, the fall of the communist regime in Romania. Marking Bogdan Mureșanu’s feature directorial debut, the film premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in 2024, where it earned the prestigious Orizzonti Award for Best Film. The critically acclaimed drama went on to sweep 11 categories at the GOPO Romanian Awards and garnered multiple accolades across international film festivals.
